This past weeked, the streets of Houston witnessed 16 great Ethiopian marathonists take over the 2019 Cheveron Houston Marathon by the storm. Shura Kitata and Jemal Yimer came in 1st and 2nd in the men’s half marathon while Biruktayit Degefa, Belaynesh Fikadu, Meseret Belete, Buze Diriba and Sechale Dalasa dominated the womens’ marathon by coming in 1st through 5th in a powerfully spectacular performance that rocked spectators at the finish line. Yitayal Atnafu came in second only 5 seconds behind his Kenyan adversary in the mens’ marathon while Ruti Aga came in 3rd in the women’s half marathon. The level of support of volunteers from the Ethiopian Community Organization in Houston and Geda Football Club(Houston) was astonishing and left a lasting impression on the athletes. At the dinner reception held Sunday night in their honor at Sheger Ethiopian Restaurant, the athletes admitted to have never seen such an outpouring of love and support from an Ethiopian community.
